Today's Word—Journalistic Vigor

Wanted: Vigorous reporting...

“Good local reporting costs money and flourishes only in a newsroom with a climate of editorial vigor and independence, as well as a tradition of seeking significant news no matter whom it may displease. Often the better the local reporting, the more criticism it will attract; significant news is controversial.”
—Kenneth Macdonald (1908-2004), longtime editor, the Des Moines Register

  1. Maybe I am biased because I am friends with the city editor of the HJ, but I think that the HJ does as a good a job with local news in this town as is possible. You got Mormons saying they are a left wing tool; and, the left wing says they are an arm of the LDS propaganda machine. For the limited budget they have in a town where nothing happens, they do a good job. Passion and vigor!
