Today's Word—Citizen Skepticism

.
On Critical Thinking:

“The media . . . shape perceptions and conceal issues. Look at the 2000 presidential campaign, for example, where the media were so heavily biased against Al Gore. That’s what brought Bush to within a Supreme Court decision of the White House. So if you look at, certainly these last seven years, the role of the media in not telling you reasons why you should be skeptical . . . [is] enormously important.”
—Paul Krugman, New York Times columnist and author, The Conscience of a Liberal, 2007

  1. If you are going to cite Paul Krugman, I look forward to an Ann Coulter quote in the future to assure impartiality! They are rhetorical - if not ideological - soulmates.

  2. Doug: Gladly. Find me a parallel Coulter quote on the press. The WORD is an equal-opportunity offender.

  3. Hold on, Anonymous.
    Ted's blog is about Journalism.
Unless the standards, such as they are today, include cynical, self-promoting bigots, Coulter doesn't qualify.
Keep up the good word, Ted.
By the way, why are you anonymous?

  4. Doug raises a perfectly valid point--the rabid from either camp do us all (and civil discourse) the same disservice. People who watch nothing but Fox and imbibe nothing but CoulterHannityOReilly are no more misguided than those whose diet is pure PBSNPRMoveOn.OrgDemocracyNow. Both camps are voluntarily blind.

  5. Good call, Doug. According to a website that tracks media bias, Paul Krugman was found to be the most partisan liberal columnist and Ann Coulter the most partisan conservative. So, they're the reigning kind and queen of partisan journalism.

Conclusion: Don’t take either Krugman or Coulter too seriously.

But then in this day and age of soundbite wars, who CAN WE TAKE seriously?

    Greetings Ted -

Healthy skepticism is always a good thing, as long as we stay open minded. Now, I don't mean to preach to the choir, but that is my definition of an educated person, one that is open minded.

I also believe that we (Americans) are being forced back into thinking a little more, than we were before. And if people can change, so can the planet.

Thanks again for being part of the change.

    The WORDman replied:

Amen, Ali. I guess I share your optimism about human and the future of the planet, because I keep getting up every morning to fight the good fight. On the other hand, if you watch the pundits on MSNBC or Fox or CNN, you end up running screaming into the woods. or I do, anyway. A propos, I just found this quote: "I believe I found the missing link between animal and civilized man. It is us." --Konrad Lorenz

    And Ali came back:

I don't know how you can stand watching all of that news! I think that is how I remain optimistic, is by not watching it! I have to stay focused on the goodness of us all, and I just have become too sensitive to appreciate that kind of broadcasting. I can watch the weather channel though, in moderation!

    Happy Friday!
