Bad News: “Newspaper
giant McClatchy files for bankruptcy, hobbled by debt and declining print
revenue,” Taylor Telford and Thomas Heath, The Washington Post, Feb. 13,
2020. McClathy, which bought Knight-Ridder newspapers in 2006, owns 30 dailies,
including the Miami Herald, the Sacramento Bee, Kansas City Star and other
regional papers.
“When local media suffers in the face of
industry challenges, communities suffer: Polarization grows, civic connections
fray and borrowing costs rise for local governments. We are moving with speed
and focus to benefit all our stakeholders and our communities.” —Craig Forman, McClatchy president and chief executive.
“The biggest impact of the decline is on
communities that are losing coverage each year, the basic news and governments
that are going uncovered. People are becoming illiterate and innumerate in
terms of what they know and how they can act as citizens in a democracy.” —Ken Doctor, newspaper analyst.
