Today's Word—“Getting” the News

.
Watch the News. It’s More Fun!

“I just feel sorry for people who only get their news from us because they’re missing half the joke. Yes, we do a joke on what the news is, but the other half is on how the news is reported. So, if they watch the nightly news or cable news program, they’ll enjoy our show more.”

Stephen Colbert, host, The Colbert Report, Comedy Central, 2007

  1. God Bless Stephen and John. Life is so grand with them. I pity past eras with no humor to be found.

  2. What I pity is that our 24-hour newsmedia are so blatantly cockeyed that they make such easy targets for satire.

  3. Well, bwad, no one would disagree with you (see the 11/13 post from Murrow), but the equation is a complex of codependency between lowest-common-denominator audiences (who either don't demand better or who opt out, leaving the vast wasteland behind), and content providers who learn that less is more in terms of advertising sensibilities and glazed audience eyeballs.

The result is that we are dominated by the loudest, most profane, most inane, most outraged, most intolerant, most sacchrine and stoopid.

I'm with Carol--thank god we can laugh with StewBert. Otherwise, we'd be weeping.
