Today's Word—Evil Stoopidity?

“The government is bailing out Wall Street for being evil and the car companies for being stupid. But print journalism brings you Paul Krugman and Anna Quindlen. Also, in 1898 Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal started the Spanish-American War. All of the Lehman Brothers put together couldn’t cause as much evil stupidity as that.”
—P.J. O’Rourke, columnist, The Weekly Standard, December 2008

  1. Yo, P.J. who started the Iraq War, tortured prisoners and God knows who else, set up spying on American citizens, slept through the ramp up to a meltdown of the global economy and, by the way, cut brush in Crawford as the 9/11 hijackers were sharpening their box cutters? And the Weekly Standard, as the banner carrier for neo-conservatism, was leading the charge. I’ll take Pulitzer, Hearst and the Spanish-American War any old day. They never laid a glove on the level of evil the country is trying to recover from.

    Ted,
Thanks for turning over today’s rock.

  2. Ted,

From what I’ve seen of P. J. O’Rourke, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and the rest of those radical right shouters, screamers and fear mongers, every day is a bad intestinal day. They are mediocre thinkers getting staggering amounts of money to rant that the sky is falling every time the government helps out-of-work, out-of-home, out-of-health or out-of-whatever members of middle and poorer classes. God knows there’s plenty of “out-ofs” out there, and it finally appears that we have a President who is inclined to at least look at the wreckage around him. For that the O’Rourkes howl at the rise of socialism, the demise of Reaganism, and the general crash of their brand of self-proclaimed 100% Americanism. I, for one, am thoroughly sick of seeing their footprints in places like the Weekly Standard, Fox News,r Clear Channel, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page or any of the many other media outlets funded by the odorous fortune of Rupert Murdoch. I recognize the right of this whole ugly bunch to do their thing. And I recognize their right to claim that they do what they do in the name of a higher form of journalism. I even recognize the right of several million countrymen, and women, to consume this swill day after day. But I also retain the right to be thoroughly disgusted at the sight of their words or the sounds of their voices.
