Chowderhead

.
Soapbox
“Why should you examine your writing style with the idea of improving it? Do so as a mark of respect for your readers, whatever you’re writing. If you scribble your thoughts any which way, your reader will surely feel that you care nothing about them. They will mark you down as an egomaniac or a chowderhead—or, worse, they will stop reading you.”

—Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007), writer URL

Pass the Talking Stick

.
Freedom for Others

“The whole essence of freedom is that it is freedom for others as well as ourselves, . . . a conception which is not born with us, but which we must painfully acquire. Most of us have no instinct at all to preserve the right of the other fellow to think what he likes about our beliefs, and to say what he likes about our opinions . . . [But] if truth is to emerge, and in the long run be triumphant, the process of free debate, the untrammeled clash of opinion, must go on.”

—Robert Menzies (1894-1978), Australia’s longest-serving prime minister, 1942 URL (Thanks to alert WORDster Bill Snaddon in Swaziland)

Looking Back

.
. . . to Move Forward

“Today we continue a never-ending journey to bridge the meaning of [our founding] words with the realities of our time. For history tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they’ve never been self-executing; that while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth. The patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a republic, a government of, and by, and for the people, entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed.

“And for more than two hundred years, we have.

“Through blood drawn by lash and blood drawn by sword, we learned that no union founded on the principles of liberty and equality could survive half-slave and half-free. We made ourselves anew, and vowed to move forward together.”

—President Barack Obama, in his second inaugural address, Jan. 21, 2013 (Thanks to James Fallows)

“He puts a positive spin on everything. Anything is possible.” —Quote from the inauguration crowd, National Public Radio, Jan. 21, 2013
