Ted,
ReplyDeleteMike Royko said it best years ago, when Murdoch’s sleaze machine bought the Chicago Sun-Times. As Mike was heading out the door, that same day, to write his column for the Tribune across the street, he said “no self-respecting fish would be caught dead wrapped in a Rupert Murdoch newspaper.” Amen. That $32.9 billion in revenues reaffirms the famous quote by H. L. Mencken that “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people." For an Australian, Murdoch certainly seems to have figured out the American people quite well. The New York Times struggles and Fox News Channel prospers. Go figger.

ReplyDeleteI love what Rupert's success says about the country. Well, "love" is a bit strong. On an investor group's page describing NewsCorp, under "Major Industry" it says, "Recreation" and under "Sub Industry," "Motion Pictures."
Its not that hard to figure out americans... look at your foreign policy, your politics and the swill that comes out of 'hollywood', big and small screen...
ReplyDeletea dash of this, a pinch of that, a dose of the other and you have it in a nutshell... Rupert's merely providing what you say you want...
What a sad epitaph for what once was the promise of this land...
And I dont say that with any malice....rather with the weariness of one who's been working hard with a small group of others to save one of Seattle's schools - the first alternative school in the city, founded 40 years ago - from the latest of regular District attempts to close it down ...
Newscorp has decided that only one side of the issues Americans are dealing with today are important to it's audience. Apparently anything that Rupert Murdoch doesn't approve of isn't going to be defined as an issue in our time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this comment. People don't realize that the newspaper and media were started in this country to inform the public of the tyrannies of Britain's government. The media have been doing it for hundreds of years and people don't appreciate that fact.
